Critical Language Scholarship

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship Program is a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. The goal of the CLS Program is to provide Americans with the opportunity to study and maser critical languages while building relations between people of the United States and other countries. The program offers instruction in 13 languages and some languages do not require any previous experience.

The program provides room and board, often with a host family, U.S. academic credit, domestic and international airfare, and a small stipend. After the completion of the program, participants will receive a certified American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) score.
