Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunities with Gervase Programs!

We are excited to announce that we are beginning to accept applications for the Lisa Raines and AAP Summer Research Fellowship and the Georgetown Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (GUROP) Summer Fellowship. With February just around the corner, we encourage students to think about their plans for the summer now, with the possibility of applying to these two programs.

***Deadline for both fellowships is Wednesday, March 19, 2014.***

The Lisa Raines and AAP Summer Research Fellowship is an opportunity for Georgetown sophomores and juniors to conduct independent summer research at Georgetown or abroad. Raines recipients will receive $5,000 dollars in two payments of $2,500 during the summer to conduct research, the first at the beginning of the summer and the second after the students present their research. Students will work full-time for eight to ten weeks either at Georgetown or abroad. At the end of the eight or ten weeks, students will present their research in the format of their choosing. For more information, please click here and email Laura Wagstaff to receive an application packet.

The GUROP Summer Fellowship gives students $3,000 for a full-time experience to conduct research during the summer. Students will receive this sum in two $1,500 payments, the first in the beginning of the summer and the second at the end of the research period. The program will last 10 weeks and students are expected to work full time during this process. For more information, please email Sonia Jacobson.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I increase my chances of winning one of these fellowships?
Begin by writing a research proposal that is clear and understandable. Even though your research topic may be complex, you must present it in a way that nearly everyone could understand it. Another tip is to be as specific as possible in your proposal. Try to identify what resources you can use to conduct your research. Finding the right resources is crucial if you wish to study abroad. Many of our students identified libraries, institutions, and organizations abroad that will assist them in their research endeavors.

What if my family is in considerable financial need?
The Raines fellowship totals $5,000, with the half of the amount ($2,500) given to the student at the beginning of the summer and the second half ($2,500) given at the successful completion of the research project.

For GUROP Summer Fellowship, recipients are awarded $3,000 that is provided in mid-August based on evaluations provided by both the student and their faculty research mentor. Variable funding (a maximum of $300) is provided for specific, approved expenses as detailed in the application.  Further funding is possible (a maximum of $2,000) for students who have a high degree of financial need, as verified by the Office of Student Financial Services.

I want to study abroad, but how can I find a place to stay?
With the Raines scholarship, most students were able to afford to stay in hotels. We also encourage students to talk to their professors or even the Jesuits on campus to see if they know people who can assist you with living situations.

What are some takeaways from students who participated in summer research?
Students who participate in independent research truly enjoyed the experience.  Independent research not only gives students the opportunity to engage in intensive academic research, students learn how to cultivate their interests and develop analytical thinking.
