Carroll Fellow Receives Winston Churchill Scholarship!

Congratulations to Eric Mooring (C’13) as a recipient of the Winston Churchill Scholarship.  One out of 14 recipients nationwide, he plans to conduct research in infectious diseases at the University of Cambridge next year.  A double major in environmental biology and government with a minor in mathematics, Eric Mooring will continue his scholarly pursuits with Professor James Wood in the Disease Dynamics Unit.  While abroad, Mooring hopes to discover new ways on how he can apply his work for the improvement of the world.

First awarded in 1963, the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States funds one year of graduate study for those interested in science, engineering, and mathematics. The Foundation chooses only fourteen students a year to participate in the program, and Mooring has the honor to be one of the select few to participate in this prestigious program.

A passionate researcher as an undergraduate, Eric is also a recipient of the Lisa J. Raines Scholarship and is a Hughes Research Scholar.  His independent research ranges from the landscape of ecology to the significance of contact networks as a model for epidemiological consequences.  Moreover, he was a volunteer at the Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership where he shadowed and assisted clinical laboratory technicians and researchers in the study of HIV.

Outside of the lab, you can find Eric actively engaging in on-campus groups such as the Georgetown University Math and Science Hands-On Enrichment program (GUMSHOE) and the Carroll Fellows Initiative (CFI).  Eric also enjoys keeping up with the news and current events, and enjoys lively discussions with his peers.  As an Eagle Scout, he enjoys learning about first aid, hiking in all sorts of weather, and observing the beauty and complexity of nature.

Congratulations Eric!
