On Wednesday, April 3, the sophomore and senior classes of
the Carroll Fellows Initiative gathered in Riggs library for the annual CFI
spring dinner, celebrating the achievements of the senior class, and welcoming
the sophomores into the CFI for the first time as full members. The night
presented a strange parallel, offering guests a view of the accomplishments,
bright futures, and what will surely be lifelong friendships of the seniors,
and the promise, drive, and budding relationships of the sophomores. Two of
these sophomores, Elaine Colligan and Asjed Hussein, were awarded the Romanelli
prize, named after the CFI’s co-founder, for outstanding embodiment of the CFI
motto, “the life of the mind for the life of the world”.
As the night grew late, the seniors recounted tales of their
favorite moments at Georgetown, remembering anything and, in some cases,
everything that made Georgetown and the CFI special places for them. Finally,
as the night found its end, the students wandered Riggs library, taking
pictures and talking with their friends, and Dr. Glavin, convinced by the
touching tales of the seniors, once again postponed his retirement. As they
filed out, the guests were again reminded that the seniors will be a great loss
to the program and will be even greater additions to the many amazing places
that they are going.
