Boren Scholar Studying Plants in Nepal

Alex O'Neill (COL '15), a pre-med student and Carroll Fellow, is a recipient of the Boren Scholarship and currently studying abroad in Kathmandu, Nepal.  A study abroad program for U.S. undergraduates students, the Boren funds students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad programs.  Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages.  O'Neill finds himself immersed in the Tibetan, which is spoken throughout the Himalayas, and Nepali languages, all the while conducting independent research on parasitic and heterotrophic plants.  For the spring term, he is attending classes at the Tribhuvan National University of Nepal.
